Miscellaneous Print Work
Before my research career, I worked as a graphic designer. Here is a selection of printed work from that time, made for clients, exhibitions, and other occasions.
A poster for Sight Six, AIGA Chicago's juried exhibition celebrating the six anchor sites of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial and its theme "Make New History," shown at the Chicago Cultural Center.
We produced a collective reader for Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. Each designer created a custom cover sleeve and designed the spreads for one of the book's thematic series.
I designed my cover inspired the book's unusual structure, in which chapters are numbered and grouped into recurring thematic series. The numbers follow that pattern, while bars overlay them and obscure parts of the sequence, echoing the book's concern with what remains unseen.
Calvino's continuous cities run on without edges or end. That question of where one place stops and another begins ran alongside what I was working out personally at the time, so the spreads draw on a personal archive of homes, places, and objects around Detroit.
2020 Italian Design Day
Italian Design Day is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The 2020 edition was hosted in Chicago by the Italian Consulate and Italian Cultural Institute with SAIC and IIT. The exhibition installations were cancelled by the Covid-19 pandemic. A Personal Food Journey is a book tracing my food culture across four phases of my life. For Homesick Microwave, a film made with Rio Chen, we drew on family heirlooms like photographs and handwritten recipes to repackage our grandparents' cooking as mass-produced frozen meals.
